Archive is a documentary focused on the future of long-term digital storage, the history of the Internet and attempts to preserve its contents on a massive scale.
Part one features Brewster Kahle, founder of the Internet Archive and his colleagues Robert Miller, director of books, and Alexis Rossi, director of web collections. On a mission to create universal access to all knowledge, the Internet Archive’s staff have built the world’s largest online library, offering 10 petabytes of archived websites, books, movies, music, and television broadcasts.
The video includes a tour of the Internet Archive’s headquarters in San Francisco, the book scanning center, and the book storage facilities in Richmond, California.

Produced at the Internet Archive on October 22-26, during the Books in Browsers Conference and 10 Petabyte Celebration

On October 30, 2012, Hurricane Sandy hit New York City causing a record storm surge to sweep through Eyebeam, leaving behind three and a half feet of saltwater mixed with sewage and corrosives. In a single day, the flood claimed over $250,000 worth of AV equipment, books, and computers. Among the wreckage was Eyebeam’s archive of analog and digital media, chronicling the organization’s fifteen years of experimental art and technology.

Recent advancements in touch screens and gestural interfaces have revolutionized human-computer interaction. What if these same devices could allow non-human species to use computers?

At the Pittsburgh Zoo, Max Hawkins, a young software artist, and Michelle Farmerie, a zookeeper and primatologist, have teamed up to develop interactive apps for orangutans. They believe this software will contribute to animal enrichment by allowing the orangs to express themselves in ways never before possible.

This project confronts the challenges of interspecies communication and the potential for custom software to overcome barriers between animals in zoos and their human caretakers; helping us to understand how orangs think, while empowering them with a new set of tools.
